The Erasmus programme started as a modest mobility programme for higher-education students in 1987, with only 3200 students enrolling in its first year. The Erasmus programme has now become an emblematic programme benefiting almost 300 000 students of higher education each year. At the same time, the programme has expanded greatly and offers opportunities for study periods and internships / learning.

Mobility has helped people to receive the education, skills and competencies they need to lead independent and full lives. It has also provided them with a European experience and strengthened their sense of belonging to a community.
